What MCP Actually Is

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, that defines how AI models connect to external tools, data sources, and systems.

Think of it as a universal plug socket for AI. Before MCP, connecting an AI model to a specific tool required bespoke integration work for every single tool. MCP standardises that connection layer, so an AI model can communicate with a CRM, a database, a calendar, a document store, or any other system using a consistent, predictable protocol.

What MCP Replaces (and What It Does Not)

MCP does not replace APIs entirely. REST APIs will continue to exist and power millions of integrations. What MCP changes is how AI models interact with those systems. Rather than an AI needing to know the specific syntax of every API it might call, MCP acts as an intermediary: the AI speaks to an MCP server, and the MCP server speaks to the underlying tool in whatever language that tool understands.

The practical result is that AI agents become dramatically more capable of operating across multiple systems simultaneously, because they no longer need to be individually configured for each one.
